Tutor Faqs

GLAD Chat offers a small, group-based English conversation class. So, you will tutor 1-3 students as a group.

Once you are assigned a new student, you will receive a Student’s Chart that indicates the student’s information. Make sure you have read through this before your first meeting with them.

Our students sign up for quarterly, semi-annual, or annual sessions.

Please do your best to make your students feel that your class is worthwhile so they continue signing up and learn from your tutoring. If your students continuously drop your class, you will no longer be qualified to be a tutor.

You must join the Zoom meeting no later than 6:05 PM PST/9:05 PM EST every Friday. (Or, during winter daylight savings, 5:05 PM PST/8:05 PM EST)Your lesson should begin by 6:15 PM PST/9:15 PM EST. Since it is only a 30-minute lesson, to ensure that the lesson is high-quality, always provide students with an extra 5 minutes in case they were late or have questions. Try not to be rushed when saying goodbye to them.

When you enter the Zoom, please change your Zoom name to: First Name + Last name + Tutor so the host can identify who you are. For example: Judy Smith Tutor. If you are new and want to learn how to become a tutor, please change your Zoom name to: First Name + Last name + TA. For example: Judy Smith TA. This way, you can spectate a tutoring session by another tutor teaching their students to see how the classes work.

For a 30-minute lesson, we kindly provide you 45 minutes of volunteer hours, as this including your waiting time. Being tardy will cause a reduction in volunteer hours. Please set an alarm and don’t be late!

This could be either of the following reasons:

a. A tutor who just joined GLAD Academy wants to see how the classes work. (They will usually have “TA” at the end of their Zoom name).

b. We have Zoom administrators that check in once in a while to ensure that the classes are high-quality and running smoothly.

Due to the time zone difference between foreign countries, you should try to report this to us before the Wednesday of the week you have to be absent so we have enough time to notify your students and make arrangements.

Once you are back, always check if you have to teach 45-minute lesson for the next 2 lessons to make-up for a missed lesson or if a substitute tutor already made up your lesson.

A talkative student will tend to participate more than a quiet student. Please ensure that every student has the opportunity to truly express themselves by giving them equal time to talk.

During your lessons, remember to turn on your video, smile, make eye contact, and give your students encouragement and praise.

We strongly recommend that you use Google slides or PowerPoint to prepare your lessons! Also, share your thoughts, build friendships, and your conversations will become more meaningful and fun!

Yes! We record your volunteer hours, so please let us know when you need the certification.
